Breaking Pen

Privacy policy

Your text never leaves your Mac.

Breaking Pen runs a language model on your own computer. It has no account, no server that sees your writing, and no analytics inside the app. This page lists every case in which the app or this website touches the network.

What the app reads

When you press a shortcut, Breaking Pen reads the text you selected, through the macOS Accessibility permission. It transforms that text with a model on your Mac and writes the result back in place. It reads nothing else. It does not read password fields, and it does not read text you did not select.

The selected text and the result stay in memory only as long as the action runs, plus the last ten results so that Revert works. They are never written to disk and never sent anywhere.

What the app sends over the network

There are exactly three network calls, and none of them carries your text.

  1. The model download, once. The app downloads the model you pick from Hugging Face (huggingface.co). Hugging Face sees the request like any other download: your IP address and the file name. The model is stored in ~/Library/Application Support/Breaking Pen/models. You can delete it from Settings.
  2. The update check, once a day. The app asks breakingpen.com for its appcast, a small file that lists the current version. The request contains no identifier and no system profile. Cloudflare, which hosts the site, sees your IP address and user agent, as it does for any web request. You can turn automatic checks off in Settings.
  3. The license key, when you paste it. When you activate a key, the app sends the key and the name of your Mac (the name in System Settings ▸ General ▸ About) to Dodo Payments, the service that sells the license. The Mac name is shown to you in the seat list so you can tell your Macs apart. Once a day the app confirms the key is still valid, with the key and a seat identifier. If the check cannot run, the app keeps working.

If you do not activate a key, the app makes no call to Dodo Payments at all.

What the app stores on your Mac

Buying a license

Purchases go through Dodo Payments, which acts as the merchant of record. Dodo collects your email address and payment details on its own checkout page, handles tax, and emails you the license key. Breaking Pen never sees your card. Dodo's own privacy policy covers that checkout. We see the email address of each purchase so that we can answer support questions and free a seat when you ask.

This website

breakingpen.com is a static site on Cloudflare Pages. It sets no cookies and loads no advertising or tracking script. The fonts come from Google Fonts, which sees a request for the font files. Cloudflare keeps standard server logs, such as IP addresses and request times, to serve and protect the site.

Children

Breaking Pen is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version appears on this page with a new date. A change that widens what the app sends would also be named in the app's release notes.
